L’opus 34, l’une des partitions favorites de Brahms, connut une longue maturation : d’abord quintette à cordes, détruit, puis sonate pour deux pianos, il connaît finalement sa version définitive dans un format à cinq, piano et cordes. Le Quatuor Ébène – ici rejoint par Anna Vinnitskaya, qui sait elle aussi colorer Brahms de sa palette de nuances infinie – en a livré un enregistrement de référence. La pianiste offre auparavant son clavier en résonance à la voix ardente de la mezzo-soprano suisse Marina Viotti pour des chansons tziganes, version voix et piano, et deux chants avec alto obbligato. En introduction, le deuxième quatuor à cordes, genre viennois par excellence, dont Brahms s’est saisi à trois reprises après son installation dans la capitale autrichienne.
